Why Your Service Business Website Doesn't Get Calls

Pretty is one layer. That's good. We want a pretty site. That's often where designers stop.

A website that actually makes you money needs three layers: get found, build trust, and make the next step obvious. Facebook, Google Business Profile, Yelp, Nextdoor — you should be on all of them. But you're missing free traffic if you're not on Google and the AIs (ChatGPT, Gemini, and the rest). A lot of what gets you onto Google also gets you onto the AIs. Layer one is getting found

When I take on new SEO clients, the first thing I do is rebuild their site. If they only wanted the basics done for SEO — metadata, titles, the behind-the-scenes parts of the pages so they can be found on Google — I would charge $1,000 for that. The websites we build through Augenix have that $1,000 of SEO baked into the homepage from day one. You can build on AI, on GoDaddy, or ask cousin Vinnie. It might be pretty. It might work. It probably won't have all three layers. Don't ask "do I have a website." Ask "am I getting customers from it."

Out of the box we put an H1 that tells Google what you are: plumbing in this city, or whatever the trade is. Services as H2s. Full name, address, and phone on the page. Seems simple. So many people miss it.

Layer two is trust

They're not going to click that number and call unless they trust you. Photos of your team and your work. Trust signals from day one: licensed and insured, and customize them — BBB, Yelp, Nextdoor, a guarantee, a pro badge. Customer reviews pulled from Google or Facebook, easy to see.

Layer three is the next step

Pick a primary: phone or a request form. You can have both, but one thing you keep driving people toward. Big button. Phone on every page, including mobile (sticky at the bottom). Don't make them click Contact and fumble through five options.
